Announcing the Famous Monsters Cover Project

Here’s a sneak peek at the upcoming Devil’s Workshop Famous Monsters Cover Project. Pictured here is the Phantom from FM 1966 Yearbook.

The classic monsters have always been my favorite. I’ve always wanted make some, but they’ve been done so many times by so many artists, it didn’t seem like there was a reason. I’ve also always thought that the FM cover monsters were amazing! I’d stare at those covers for hours as a kid.

So… this project will be my homage to the greatest monsters of all time, done in the amazing FM style. These will be wearable retro Don Post stlye, for true old-school mask collectors!

The first four will debut at Maskfest 2010:
#01 – FM115: Werewolf of London
#02 – 1966YB: Phantom
#03 – FM110: Ghoul
#04 – TBA

Stay tuned for more pics and HMA posts as Maskfest approaches!

Predator Restoration Pt. 3

The final set of images in the process. This past Saturday I finished painting all 44 dreads and the teeth. Today, all the pieces were assembled. First, the teeth were added. Next, the dreads. Finally, the quills!

Predator Restoration Pt. 2

After casting up the eight needed dreads and patching up all the holes, it was time to begin painting!
  • The first photo shows the first set of dreads I cast up.
  • Next, the black undercoating is applied
  • The base coat color is sponged on, then airbrushed on.
  • The next several photos show the inks being applied to establish the overall pattern.

Devil's Workshop Guide to Making Monster Masks

The goal of this guide is to provide a detailed look at the process that the Devils Workshop employs to create a monster mask from beginning to end. It is important to note: while this is the process that I use, I make no claim that these are the best practices, the most efficient or best way to make a mask. They are simply the steps that work for me.

This guide documents the process of creating the Devil’s Workshop mask “The Wrapture”. The copy created in this guide was the first copy produced and now lives happily in Ohio with the PlainFieldButcher.

Hopefully this guide can both a look at the process, but also some useful nuggets of knowledge!

Predator Restoration Pt. 1

I had the pleasure of being asked to restore a Predator mask by thePlainfieldButcher. The sculpture by Bob Bagy is really beautiful. The mask is in rough shape being partially painted, full of super glue, full of holes and rips, and missing 8 dreadlocks.

  • The first picture shows the scale of the mask next to a Creepster and a few Demon Seeds.
  • The next pic shows the handful (literally) of super glue I pulled off it.
  • Next, I removed all the dreads and labeled them and the head. In addition, the dreads and head had to be patched and seamed.
  • The teeth needed to be pulled and clean also.
  • Finally, I made molds of 4 dreads to cast up the missing 8.
I’ll post more updates when I start to paint this bad-boy!
